Karate Kid 2010 – a review

Posted on | May 28, 2010 | 1 Comment

Last night my son and I saw a sneak peak of the new Karate Kid movie. We went with our martial arts class, who received a number of free passes.

First things first: This is not a continuation of the story. It’s a remake. Second things… second? This movie takes place in China, so calling it “Karate Kid” is a misnomer, but then again our martial arts is Tang Soo Do, but is also advertised as Karate, so I do understand how it’s all just marketing really.

How to get past my match.com filters

I know that no one really asked for this information, but I’m hoping that one day it’s important to a suitable suitor for myself, or another person like myself.

The phone call that changed my life…

Posted on | May 3, 2010 | No Comments

I have wrestled with posting this or not, but I figure that telling the truth is never a bad thing, and that writing about things such as these are always a nice way to stay focused and process the events of the past. To protect the parties involved, all names are changed. My ex-wife will be known as “Katie.”

Years ago, almost three to be precise, I sat at home with my newly adopted child. He was four years of age, and my (then) wife was on a work assignment in Portland, Oregon. She had been there for a week. Due to the nature of her work, cell phone communication was limited, and at best I was able to talk to her every other day or so. One day she called and I asked her why her cousins removed me from Myspace. It seemed a bit strange to me, especially considering that one of her cousins was recently over to watch my son.

A visit from the spirit of Earth Day Past.

Posted on | April 22, 2010 | No Comments

Today is Earth Day, and what a better way to celebrate it than by buying Avatar (available today on dvd and blu-ray)?  I am still trying to figure out the logic behind releasing a video about another planet on Earth Day?  It would be like selling Christmas decorations on Easter.

Earth Day always brings back a particular memory for me.  As a child Earth Day was a fairly new fad (Earth Day turned 40 this year). I even recall a television special about it, where Doc Brown (from Back to the Future) came from the not-so-distant future and warned all of the celebrities about what COULD happen if we don’t change our ways.  Of course I most likely watched this show after eating my Chicken McNuggets out of a styrofoam container, and using my giant aerosol hair spray can to solidify my already-butchwaxed hair.  C’mon, it was the 80s.

The five gayest videos I’ve seen online

Posted on | April 21, 2010 | 1 Comment

Listen, I’m the first to hate gay bashing, using “gay” as a synonym for “stupid,” and random people (my ex wife) calling me gay because I sew, cook, and enjoy gardening.  I have gay friends, family, and have had gay roommates.

There are a few instances, however, that no matter how tolerant you are, not matter how diverse your experience, and no matter what your political leaning is, you just have to say, “wow, that’s the gayest thing I’ve ever seen.”

These videos are a collection of those.  If you have a pulse and have been on the internet for more than a day, odds are you’ve already seen all of these.

I tried KFC’s double down “sandwich” so you don’t have to.

Posted on | April 20, 2010 | 4 Comments

Yes, in the same day I post about P90X, I decide it to be a good idea to try KFC’s new double down “sandwich.”   I mean, what could possibly go wrong when you have bacon, cheese, and some sort of sauce between two greasy breaded chicken breasts?

To understand better what I’ve done for you by eating this sandwich, let me introduce you to my colon: The Savior of the World.  My colon might very well die because of this experiment, and it will do so that you may live.  The next time you crave the Double Down Sandwich, look down at your W.W.M.C.D. (What Would Matt’s Colon Do?) bracelett and just say no.

My p90x journey (or, “Learning to Bring It”)

Posted on | April 20, 2010 | 2 Comments

If you own a TV, or know anyone who owns one, there is a good chance you’ve seen the infomercial for P90X.  P90x is an exercise program designed for people who want drastic results, and fairly quickly.  The “90″ in p90x represents the 90 days the program lasts, which happens in 3 seperate phases.

Keep in mind that p90x is a lot of things, but “easy” is not one of them.  It is a lot of hard work, but it’s also very doable.  I will be the first to admit that I am 40 days in and am still unable to do too many “man” pushups.  I’m still on my knees, but I’m still doing it.  Another thing that p90x is is a lifestyle.  It is a diet, a workout routine, and a community.  Beachbody.com has an excellent online community to support, sustain, and hold you accountable.

The Chaos Experiment

Posted on | February 8, 2010 | 1 Comment

Every so often I will rent movies that are off the beaten path.  I will pick up a movie at the movie store based on it’s cover, read the plot synopsis, and hope that it will be a great movie that few people know of.  The Chaos Experiment, with Val Kilmer, was NOT one of those movies.

Today was the last day of my current job

Posted on | January 30, 2010 | 1 Comment

Years ago I moved to Utah from California. I was able to keep my job and work from home. It went on this way for three years. I was eventually laid off due to the fact that the construction industry was hurting financially, and since my job was in construction (albeit the geeky technical side of it) my job was cut.

After that I went into radio, and that job lasted for approximately one year until I was laid off. Terrestrial radio, like construction, isn’t what anyone would call a “growth” industry… at least not radio as we know it.

My experience applying at Omniture

Posted on | January 26, 2010 | 3 Comments

in May of 2009 a few things happened at my previous job that made me want to pursue work elsewhere.  I sent my application to a number of places, and had one interview.  It turns out that the place interviewing me was in Sandy, UT, which was approximately a 30 minute drive.  The drive was a deal breaker when I realized that the pay wasn’t much more than I was currently making.

Another place I applied for was Omniture.  Here in Utah Omniture has billboards up for jobs on the drive in and out of Utah County.  I figured that while Omniture is a big company (the closest thing to a software giant in Utah) it was worth applying for.  I heard nothing for months, assuming I was under-qualified.
